The song was written after getting out of bed unable to sleep at around 4 AM. I had been pondering the idea of the perpetual eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil for some time. This thought goes in several directions and it can be applied to a broad range of topics but it primarily deals with the entanglement of the churches under the world system. This is a recurring theme of the album.
lyrics
I Wish I could sing to you a lullaby
I wish I could tell you it's all right
I wish I could find the simple faith of a babe
I wish I hadn't eaten from that tree
I'm overwhelmed by the urgency
and then I just have to breathe
can't catch the words that I need to speak
just have to say what I see
Chorus:
Here we are many miles down the road
still livin lies we been sold
like a walkin bird
don't know that he can fly
still eatin from the tree
- that's why
Father warned
liar lied
didn't take long to decide
and still today we play the game
we think we're free in these chains
Chorus:
Here we are many miles down the road
still livin lies we been sold
like a walkin bird
don't know that he can fly
still eatin from the tree
- that's why
I Wish I could sing to you a lullaby
I wish I could tell you it's all right
I wish I could find the simple faith of a babe
I wish I hadn't eaten from that tree
