Some Time Ago

about

This may be the oldest piece on the album. I thought this piece sounded like a distant memory, I thought it had a looking back and looking forward kind of sound to it. It sounded like it was referencing something from the past, coming to terms with it and moving on. When it was written it was just a jam on the street. I played it for several months and then it dropped off. But around the time the studio sessions were in view it found it's way back into my busking repertoire.

When the opportunity arose to work with Ron Sachs and record an album , I knew I had a bunch of songs and instrumentals that fit together. This one seemed to naturally fit as the opening piece.

We began sessions for the album on December 25, 2013. Around the same time I was making arrangements to relocate to Kentucky. Early on in the sessions I had envisioned...in my minds ear, an intro that would set up the album. I saw an old house that held memories that had been closed up for years. I wanted to record sounds of footsteps going up the stairs to the porch and the door opening to the sound of the first chords of music on the album.

I told Ron about the idea and as the sessions went on and the album took shape I let the idea drop off. I figured I did not know where I would find the place to record those sounds and I would just forget it.

I believe the last session was April 16, 2014 . I left Ron with the tracks for mixing and mastering and made my move to Kentucky. After settling in a couple weeks, it dawned on me one morning that I was at the very place I had envisioned for the intro. Without hesitation I grabbed my hand held recorder and walked out to the street and turned it on. What I recorded that day here in Kentucky is what I envisioned in California earlier in the year and it is what opens the album exactly the way I heard it.
